SAFETY FROM FIRE
Fit smoke alarms and check the batteries regularly.(Remember smoke is a KILLER !!!)
In your kitchen – install a smoke blanket and a powder or CO2 fire extinguisher. Since you have made your home secure – ensure that you have an evacuation plan should you have a fire. Organize an RV or meeting place outside, a safe distance from the home to meet and account for all occupants/pets.
Never attempt to fight a fire yourself unless you are sure that you can put it out and only tackle a fire after calling the fire brigade. Statistically most fires start in the kitchen (30%) but the remainder of house fires occur as follows: 15% bedrooms, 8-10% living rooms, 8-10% chimneys, 2-5% laundry.
The kitchen fires are usually the dreaded chip pan or food left cooking unattended. Most other causes are cigarettes, electrical faults (overloading circuits), unattended open fires and defective electrical appliances.
Make sure appliances have the correct size fuses, clean air conditioners regularly, have your electrical wiring checked regularly. Keep entrances and walk-ways clear.
-
At night before retiring to bed empty ashtrays and ensure that the bin is placed outside.
-
Switch off electrical appliances at the wall socket.
-
Make sure open fires are burnt down and fit a fire guard, shut all doors.
Don’t smoke in bed.
If you have a fire in your home remember that it is important to follow your evacuation drill, the freshest air is just above floor level so keep low, to check what is happening in an adjoining room DO NOT open the door – place the back of your hand against the door and feel for warmth. If you must open the door, do so slowly using the door as a shield.
